Each year, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Education gives out scholarship papers to Grade 5 students in the form of past exam papers for people who are interested in pursuing an education in Sri Lanka. These papers are also helpful for students who forgot what they studied in grade school. This list includes biology, chemistry, mathematics, English language and literature, geography, history, and social science questions. The questionnaire consists of 12 general knowledge questions that test a student's ability to recall short-term events that occurred within three years ago. It also includes 4 questions about languages spoken in Sri Lanka that will probe into a student's understanding of their country's history and location on Earth. The questionnaire also has 3 mathematics questions that are more intricate than the previous years. The first two questions are pre-algebra, while the third question involves an algorithm that involves simple algebra. The scholarship exam is held yearly by the Ministry of Education for students of Grade 5. The examination consists of 12 questions which are based on general knowledge. These include one compulsory question each on languages spoken in Sri Lanka, geography, history and social studies, English language and literature, science and mathematics. The examination is generally held on a Sunday after school hours in March or April. Since there are only 12 questions, all students who wish to pass must answer at least 9 of them correctly; otherwise they will receive no scholarship for the following year (i. e. they will not be eligible to take the exam again). Students who do not pass this examination receive no financial aid for post-secondary education and must instead pay the tuition fee by themselves. The Bureau of Colombo addresses scholarship exams at Bureau of Colombo Address: XXXXXXXXXX, P.O Box 729, Colombo 5 (within Sri Lanka; you can also email at [email protected] ). As in previous years, the eligibility criteria have also changed in 2012 in order to include more students in receiving a scholarship. Examinations are conducted in March or April for admissions into higher education institutions in the academic year that begins in July. However, under certain circumstances students are allowed to take the examination at a later date. The Ministry of Education announces the eligibility criteria, schedule of examinations and methods of application in newspapers well in advance. Students who have passed their GCE Ordinary Level examination or its equivalent with at least grade 3, or GCE Advanced Level examination or its equivalent with at least grade B may apply for Grade 5 scholarship. State schools are automatically entitled to receive Grade 5 scholarships. However students who register to State schools are automatically eligible for scholarship without securing eligibility certificate from the Ministry. Students who wish to receive a scholarship must take an exam consisting solely of general knowledge questions pertaining to their country's history, geography, culture and language skills. Many other countries also have a similar exam, such as the United States' High School Knowledge Test. The Grade 5 exam includes 10 questions on Sri Lankan history and culture, four questions on geography, two questions on language skills and two questions on English. The Grade 5 scholarship exam is a highly competitive test in Sri Lanka, taken by over 115,000 students annually. Although state school students are automatically eligible for the scholarship without taking an exam (they simply must attend their allocated state school), there are only 200 scholarships available each year that may be awarded to non-state-school students. cfa1e77820
